July 15 marks the one-year anniversary of an attempted coup d’état in Turkey that claimed the lives of several hundred civilians leaving more than 2000 people injured. On that fateful night, Turkish citizens courageously thwarted violent attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government in their country. Latvia offers once again its condolences to the families of the victims and to the whole Turkish nation.
A year after the tragic events, Latvia reiterates its condemnation of the coup attempt and expresses support for unwavering principles of democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Turkey. Latvia is hopeful that these dramatic pages in Turkey’s history will be turned, the state of emergency will be lifted and life will return back to a peacetime setting with full respect for democratic traditions.
