On 22 May in Brussels, at the meeting of the General Affairs Council held in an EU 27 format, Latvia will be represented by Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs.
At the General Affairs Council, the 27 EU Member States will adopt a decision authorising the opening of Brexit negotiations with the United Kingdom, and negotiating directives. A decision will also be adopted to establish an ad hoc working party that will assist the Council in all matters relating to the UK’s withdrawal from the Union.
The set of the EU’s negotiating directives covers matters to be resolved in the first phase of the negotiations, for instance, citizens’ rights, and financial commitments related to the UK’s membership of the EU. The aim of the initial stage, or the so-called first phase, of withdrawal negotiations is to reach an agreement on the prioritised issues in order to ensure legal certainty for citizens, member states and international partners.
