From 15 to 18 May, State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Andrejs Pildegovičs, was on a working visit to the United States of America.
Andrejs Pildegovičs met with Thomas Shannon, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs; Fiona Hill, senior director for European and Russian Affairs at the National Security Council, Richard Norland, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Department of Defense; Mary Warlick, Acting Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs at the Department of State; other representatives from the Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and advisors from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The State Secretary also took part in a round table organised by the U.S. German Marshall Fund on development cooperation issues and in a discussion on security of the Baltic States region held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, (CSIS).
At the meetings with U.S. officials and in discussions, high importance was attached to the strengthening of further cooperation between Latvia and the U.S. in the field of security and defence. The talks addressed preparations for the NATO Summit on 25 May and the course of deployment of the allied forces to the Baltic States, developments in Syria and joint efforts of the allies in the fight against ISIS, as well as the security climate in the Korean Peninsula.
Other topics discussed were related to the opportunities for developing cooperation in business and the energy sector, with a special focus on the importance of launching deliveries of natural gas from the U.S. to the Baltic Sea region with regard to reinforcing energy security. Andrejs Pildegovičs also shared views with his U.S. colleagues on developments in the Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries and, after evaluating development cooperating projects implemented jointly in those countries, it was agreed that the successful cooperation between Latvian and U.S. experts should be expanded.
As part of his visit, the State Secretary presented a Certificate of Commendation from the Cabinet of Ministers to Liāna Eglīte for her long-standing and dedicated service at the Embassy of Latvia in Washington D.C., promoting cooperation with Latvians living in the United States and the implementation of Latvian cultural projects, as well as taking part in the organisations of visits by Latvian officials to the United States.
