From 22 to 29 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will visit the United States of America and Canada. On 22 March, following an invitation from the Secretary of State of the United States Rex Tillerson, Edgars Rinkēvičs will participate in the meeting of foreign ministers of the Global Coalition Against ISIL/Da’esh, during which he will inform his colleagues about the work that Latvia has accomplished and is planning to do. In the meeting the ministers will assess the previous achievements of the Coalition and discuss its future plans, especially in the fields of civilian issues and stabilisation measures.
From 23 to 25 March, Edgars Rinkēvičs will pay a visit to Canada, during which a meeting will take place with Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland; the Minister of National Defence, Harjit Singh Sajjan; the Minister of International Trade, François-Philippe Champagne, and the Speaker of the House of Commons, Geoff Regan. The officials will discuss the matters of bilateral cooperation, promotion of economic cooperation, including benefits from the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), as well as the forthcoming formation and deployment of the Canadian-led multinational battalion-sized battle group in Latvia. During the visit, the Minister will make a statement in a hearing of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Representatives of Canada. In order to discuss the issues relevant to the Latvian community in Canada and preparation for the 100th anniversary of Latvia, the Minister will meet the representatives of the community in Ottawa and Toronto. It is also planned to visit the company QNX Software Systems, which offers technological solutions to different branches, for example, machine-building, medicine, defence.
At the invitation of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, from 26 to 28 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will participate in the annual Policy Conference and present the Latvian vision on the importance of the transatlantic cooperation in preventing global security threats.
On 28 March, the ministers of foreign affairs of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will meet the U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. During the meeting it is planned to discuss the implementation of the NATO Warsaw Summit decisions, as well as cooperation of the Baltic States and the United States of America in security and defence. The ministers will also have meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress, Paul Ryan; the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Corker, and Co-chairman Senator Ben Cardin. The ministers of foreign affairs of the Baltic States will also participate in the discussions organised by the U.S. think tanks - the Heritage Foundation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Brookings Institution and the Hudson Institute - on security issues and transatlantic cooperation.
In order to thank the Latvian community for its input into preserving the bond with Latvia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will also visit the Washington Latvian Centre in Rockville.
