On 18 June, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Ukrainian World Congress Eugene Czolij who has arrived in Latvia for a visit in order to discuss the current developments in Ukraine, including the integration of Ukraine into Europe, the human rights situation and the parliamentary election to be held in October.
During the conversation both parties expressed strong support to the eurointegration of Ukraine and voiced concern over court cases against the leaders of the Ukrainian opposition. Minister Rinkēvičs also stressed that democratic values, the rule of law and human rights are the basis for eurointegration and therefore selective court hearings in Ukraine are alarming. The Minister noted that Latvian officials reiterated this position during high-level visits of Ukrainian officials.
Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs and Eugene Czolij agreed that it would not be appropriate to boycott the European Football Championship. It is an excellent opportunity for Ukrainians to meet people from other European countries and to get acquainted with European culture, which will encourage Ukrainians to support integration with Europe.
The Ukrainian World Congress is an international non-governmental organisation representing the Ukrainian diaspora and the interests of 20 million strong Ukrainian community outside their homeland.
