H.E. Ambassador Aivars Groza and the Embassy’s diplomats welcomed Mr. Oskars Zebris, Latvian writer and journalist and author of the historical novel “Gaiļu kalna ēnā” (In the Shadow of Rooster Hill), at the Embassy on 11 January. Novel In the Shadow of Rooster Hill focuses on the Latvian experience during the 1905 revolution in the Russian Empire. It was written and published as part of the historical novel series “We. Latvia. The 20th Century”. The novel was awarded with the prestigious European Union Prize for Literature in 2017.
Oskars Zebris has accepted the invitation of the European Union Prize for Literature to visit India and participate in the New Delhi Book Fair which takes place from 8 till 12 January. The European Union is the chief guest of the Book Fair this year. During the Fair, Mr. Zebris is also hosting a Master Class “Different writing perspectives: from “telling a story” to building a narrative through strong characters” as part of the initiatives of the European Union Prize for Literature.
Various topics related to the translated Latvian literature as well as opportunities for Latvian authors to participate in similar Book Fairs in India in future were discussed during the meeting. Mr. Zebris also informed that 13 novels have been written by different Latvian authors within the project on historical novel series “We. Latvia. The 20th Century”. Each novel covers a different time period of the 20th Century thus giving the reader an opportunity to get a deeper insight into this historic period of the history of Latvia.
Novel In the Shadow of Rooster Hill will soon be published also in Italy, FYROM, Albania and other countries.
