Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins extends condolences to people of Russia with regard to tragic plane crash [14 Sep 2008]
The Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maris Riekstins, has sent a letter of condolence to the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, in relation to a tragic plane crash that took place near the city of Perm in the night of 14 September.

On 9 – 10 September Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins attended the annual meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Baltic and Nordic states (NB8) in Parnu, Estonia.
Latvia – Russia agreement on the status of burial sites comes into force [08 Sep 2008]
Latvian and Russian institutions have completed all necessary legal procedures so that the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the Government of the Russian Federation, signed on 18 December 2007 in Riga, on the status of Latvia's burial sites in the territory of the Russian Federation and the status of Russia's burial sites in the territory of the Republic of Latvia (hereafter the Agreement) may enter into force. The Agreement came into force on 22 August.
At extraordinary European Council meeting, Member states resolve to postpone negotiation on new EU-Russia Partnership Agreement [01 Sep 2008]
On 1 September an extraordinary meeting of the European Council was held in Brussels. Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis headed the delegation from Latvia, which included also Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins. This session was devoted to the crisis in Georgia and to the relations of the European Union with Russia.
Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins receives Russian Ambassador to Latvia and reiterates Latvia's position on situation in Georgia [28 Aug 2008]
On 28 August, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins received Ambassador of Russia to Latvia, Alexander Veshniakov, at his request of the latter. In the course of the meeting, Ambassador Veshniakov presented the official position regarding the recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
