Future priorities of Baltic Sea Region: environment, economy, energy, education, culture, and civil security [04 Jun 2008] On 4 June 2008, the Baltic Sea States Heads of Government Summit working session adopted a declaration on the reform of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS), in which the long-term priorities of the organisation are defined, and a document of the chairman's conclusions that reflects CBSS accomplishments and activities under the Latvian presidency. Future prospects in the priority areas are also defined.

Baltic Sea State officials to deliberate on future of region and CBSS reform [03 Jun 2008] On 4 June, the working session of the 7th Baltic Sea States Summit will be held, the agenda of which will include issues of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) reform, the future of the region, the accomplishments of the Latvian presidency, and a debate on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. At the close of the session, the CBSS reform declaration will be adopted and the session's conclusions will be accepted.

7th Summit of Baltic Sea State Heads of Government underway [02 Jun 2008] On 3-4 June Riga will host the 7th Baltic Sea State Heads of Government Summit, which will gather together in one place the prime ministers of 11 states - Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Russia, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Finland, Germany and Sweden, as well as representatives of the European Commission, to consider the future of the region and to come to an agreement on the reform of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) organisation. This will bring to a close Latvia's presidency of the CBSS, lasting from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008. The presidency will now be taken over from Latvia by Denmark.

Foreign Minister briefing on CBSS Summit agenda [02 Jun 2008] On 2 June, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins held a press conference, where he informed about the Summit of the Council of the Baltic Sea States taking place on 3 and 4 June in Riga and the priorities of the Latvian presidency at the CBSS. Mr Riekstins voiced the opinion that new forms of co-operation in the region should be debated and considered within the format of the CBSS.

Latvia-Russia future co-operation to be discussed at Foreign Ministry with Russian representatives [02 Jun 2008] Meetings with Vladimir Titov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, are scheduled to take place at the Foreign Ministry on 3 June. Deputy Minister Titov will arrive in Riga to participate in the Summit of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) as a member of the Russian delegation.

Foreign Ministry opens media accreditation for 7th Summit of Council of Baltic Sea States [24 Apr 2008] On 24 April, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs starts the accreditation of media representatives for the 7th Summit of the Council of the Baltic Sea States Heads of Government, gathering together prime ministers of 11 countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden) to deliberate on the region's future and on the reform of the Council of the Baltic Sea States.

Foreign Minister and German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs discuss regional co-operation [09 Apr 2008] At their meeting on 9 April Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed satisfaction with the dynamic nature of bilateral relations between the two countries, and were of one opinion that regional co-operation should be reinforced.

Press conference by Latvian jazz musicians participating in project Balticness [10 Mar 2008] On 13 March at 7 pm in the Sunny terrace jazz room of the Europa City Hotel (Brīvības iela 199C, Riga) there will be a press conference about the participation of the Latvian jazz musician association Riga Groove Electro in the travelling project Balticness, which has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the presidency of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS).

Foreign Minister discusses co-operation with Employers' Confederation as part of CBSS presidency activities [28 Feb 2008] The Foreign Minister, Maris Riekstins, on 28 February met with the Director General of the Employers' Confederation of Latvia, Elina Egle, and the organisation's EU Affairs expert, Inese Stepina, to discuss opportunities for co-operation as part of the current Latvian presidency in the Council of Baltic Sea States.

Call for analysis about the state of higher education in the Baltic Sea region [27 Feb 2008] In a discussion on 27 February at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it was noted that a high grade, reasoned review about the state of the region's higher education was required, in order to determine its competitiveness on a global level, and also to agree on the criteria for competitiveness in education as well as the means of fulfilling them.

Discussion at Foreign Ministry on competitiveness of education in the Baltic Sea region [26 Feb 2008] At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 27 February there will be a discussion on Baltic Sea region co-operation in the field of education, in relation to CBSS reforms. The discussion will be attended by representatives of regional co-operation networks, NGO's, higher education institutions and ministries. The aim of the debate is to formulate ideas and suggestions on how higher education could be adapted and improved, in order to make it more competitive and directed to the sustainable development of the region.
