Passports of the Republic of Latvia

Passports of the Republic of Latvia are issued in cases when:

  1. a person has not yet been issued a passport;
  2. a person has lost his/her passport;
  3. the passport is no longer valid for use;
  4. the person's appearance has changed markedly;
  5. the passport is not valid for travel;
  6. a person wants to receive a passport instead of valid passport of previous model.

Validity of passports

Passport of a citizen or non-citizen is issued with a following validity:

  • person up to 5 years of age – for a year or for period of travelling, if longer than a year, but no longer than for 5 years;
  • person from 5 to 60 years of age – for 5 years;
  • person from 60 years of age – for 10 years.

Passports issued within a period from 1 July 2002 until 19 November 2007 are valid for all indicated period of their validity.

Passports issued within a period from 1 July 1992 until 30 June 2002, are no longer valid as travel documents.  

 

In order to apply for a passport a person should submit necessary documents in person at the Embassy of Latvia in Belgium (Location of the Embassy's Consular section: 122 rue du Commerce, 1000 Brussels, Belgium, telephone: +32 (0) 2 2383 236; e-mail: embassy.belgium@mfa.gov.lv).

Consular visitors are admitted by prior appointment only.

 

Processing time

All documents are sent to Latvia. Practice shows that new passport can be received within approximately 4 weeks.

 

Making of photos

Photos are made at the Embassy. This condition does not apply to children up to 5 years of age. Their parents have to additionally submit 2 photos of a good quality.

 

Application Forms

A passport application form will be filled out together with the consular official at the Embassy.


Payment for a passport

All payments are accepted in cash only.


Documents to be submitted for a passport 

Documents to be submitted if the passport is expired:

  1. the passport to be exchanged;
  2. payment for a passport: 70,-EUR for adults, 55,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age;
  3. for children up to 5 years of age - good quality 2 passport-size (35 x 45 mm) photographs.

Documents to be submitted if the first name of surname has been changed:

  1. the passport to be exchanged;
  2. payment for a passport: 70,-EUR for adults, 55,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age;
  3. if name has been changed after marriage - a marriage certificate;
  4. if first name or surname has been changed due to other reason it may be necessary to prove it with relevant documentation.

Documents to be submitted if the person is under 15 years and has not yet been issued a passport:

  1. a request for a child's passport from a parent addressed to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs;
  2. a birth certificate;
  3. a confirmation that the identity code has been granted.
  4. payment for a passport: 55,-EUR;
  5. for children up to 5 years of age - good quality 2 passport-size (35 x 45 mm) photographs;

If person has not reached 15 years of age, documents for a passport must be submitted by one of parents – citizen of Latvia. A child must be presented at the Embassy along with one of parents, since consular official must verify his identity.


Documents to be submitted if the person has lost the passport or passport has been stolen:

  1. written confirmation on the loss or steal of a passport (police certificate);
  2. or written explanation on circumstances of steal, loss or destruction of a passport (is to be completed at the Embassy);
  3. payment for a passport: 75,-EUR for adults, 60,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age;
  4. any document or copy of document confirming person's identity (recommended);
  5. for children up to 5 years of age - good quality 2 passport-size (35 x 45 mm) photographs.

Documents to be submitted if the person's appearance has changed markedly:

  1. the passport to be exchanged;
  2. payment for a passport:  75,-EUR for adults, 60,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age.

Documents to be submitted if the passport is not valid for travel (i.e., there is no more space for notations, e.g. visas, border crossing stamps, or in the event that the passport expires before the end of a trip or the length of a visa):

  1. the passport to be exchanged;
  2. payment for a passport: 70,-EUR for adults, 55,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age.

Documents to be submitted to change a valid passport of previous model:

  1. the passport to be exchanged;
  2. payment for a passport: 75,-EUR for adults, 60,-EUR for persons up to 20 years of age.
