Latvia establishes diplomatic relations with Suriname [21 May 2009]
On 20 May 2009, at the Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations in New York, diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Suriname. Latvia thus continues to strengthen bilateral relations with the Latin American and Caribbean countries. Read more

On 28 April, the Government of Latvia ratified the draft law on the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons which may be Deemed to be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects, Protocol V. Read more
Foreign Minister takes part in 63rd session of UN General Assembly [19 Sep 2008]
From 22 to 26 September Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins is taking part at the sixty-third session of the UN General Assembly in New York. As each year, the General Assembly session was started off by a general debate, with participation of the heads of state and heads of government, and foreign ministers. Read more
Cabinet of Ministers endorses national report on UN Elimination of Racial Discrimination Convention [14 Jul 2008]
On 14 July the Cabinet of Ministers endorsed a national report on Latvia's adherence to the UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination of 21 December 1965 (hereinafter – Convention). The report covers the period from 2003 to 2007. Read more
OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities to attend Dziesmu un deju svetki [11 Jul 2008]
On 12 July Knut Vollebaek, the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), will attend the closing concert of the 24th Latvian Song and 14th Dance Celebration (XXIV Visparejie latviesu Dziesmu un XIV Deju svetki) at the invitation of Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins, to be introduced to Latvian cultural values and heritage. UNESCO Director-General's visit to Latvia cancelled [10 Jul 2008]
On the evening of 10 July, the office of UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura informed the Latvian Embassy in France that Mr Matsuura's visit was cancelled due to illness. Read more
Latvia joins group of countries supporting UN Alliance of Civilizations [13 May 2008]
On 9 May, Latvia joined the group of countries supporting the UN Alliance of Civilizations, thus confirming its support for the facilitation of an intercultural dialogue and tolerance on a global scale. Read more
